 | <[W]hen architects in the small seaside town of Aoya in Tottori Prefecture, Japan started clearing land for the construction of a new overpass back in 1998, they couldn’t have known they would stumble upon one of the most amazingly preserved archaeological sites the world has ever seen. And even more incredible than all the other artifacts, was the discovery of preserved human DNA from not one, but three human skulls, all about 1800 to 2000 years old. This find has placed Aoya on the map, and given Japan the distinction of being one of only six places in the world to have made such a discovery. —Matt Goerzen, “The Tottori Skulls: Bridging the Great Divide,” The Foreigner: Japan.> |
