Listen for the crunch
of dry pine needles.
Then the Unicorn stamped the ground with
his hoof, and shook his mane, and spoke.
-- C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last
Battle (1956)
Leave those "needles in a haystack" behind and turn
your ear toward unicorns in a bed of pine needles.
The crunch of fallen pine needles can be a dead
giveaway that a unicorn is present. As unicorns
stamp and paw the ground, the crisp leaves beneath
them will crackle:
The dry pine needles crumbled beneath her
feet and the unicorns' hooves, scenting the still
night air. (Kathleen Duey, The Mountains of
the Moon, 2002)
It would seem that unicorns are especially fond of
galloping amongst pine trees, no doubt lured by the
scented air.
