Listen for the crunch of dry pine needles. Then the Unicorn stamped the ground with his hoof, and shook his mane, and spoke. -- C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle (1956) Leave those "needles in a haystack" behind and turn your ear toward unicorns in a bed of pine needles. The crunch of fallen pine needles can be a dead giveaway that a unicorn is present. As unicorns stamp and paw the ground, the crisp leaves beneath them will crackle: The dry pine needles crumbled beneath her feet and the unicorns' hooves, scenting the still night air.
