Listen for a dreadful,
tree-shaking shriek of rage.
Way out nowhere with a pair of enraged
unicorns!
-- Piers Anthony, Being a Green Mother (1987)
You might believe the whole earth was trembling.
For a moment, you might believe the world
was coming to an end. When "driven beyond
endurance," a unicorn may "scream a cry of rage" so
dreadful that it can affect the sanity of an aggressor
(Lair2000, "Dragon Facts," 2000). The thunderous,
deafening, devouring shriek is indeed bone-rattling
and tree-shaking. It sounds like the announcement
of an earthquake or a furious whirlwind. From a
great distance, the shriek sounds like white noise
filling the entire sky.
Accounts of unicorns' enraged shrieks in literature
include:
The unicorn screamed, and the scream
sounded like that of a man.
-- Josephine, "Diana and the Unicorn" (2004)
