Listen for strained braying.
The melancholy braying of the unicorns,
frightened and despairing, reached them.
-- Walter Myers, Shadow of the Red Moon (1995)
On many an occasion, the labored braying of a
unicorn has taken a bystander by surprise. That
is because the troubled vibrations are like nothing
one has ever heard before. Interestingly, a unicorn's
braying has the uncanny effect of deepening the
quiet in the environment. This is believed to be due
to a sonic "interference" effect, whereby the inverted
waveform of the braying cancels out more ordinary
sound waves.
A unicorn's strained braying may sound:
like qualmish laughter
like trumpets
like howls of derision
mournful
hysterical
loud
scared
