Listen for foreign phrases. Given their prominence in Medieval Europe, it comes as no surprise that some unicorns speak impeccable Latin: "In truth," the telepathic beast answers in precise Latin and with a human timbre, more clearly than its voice has ever sounded before. "I am transfigured!" (A. A. Attanasio, The Dragon and the Unicorn, 1996) One colorful report describes a unicorn speaking an Esperantoesque mélange of languages: The white unicorn snorted and tossed his head again. In a language that sounded like a mixture of Spanish and Italian with a touch of Dutch, he spoke, "I do not like to be kept waiting. There are better things I could be doing" (Tassana Burrfoot, "The Time of Change," 2006).
