Listen for a whispered
voice within your mind.
Instantly, he realized that she had heard his
thought. And then, in a full, whinnying voice,
she spoke directly into his mind.
-- T. A. Barron, Shadows on the Stars (2005)
The telepathic ability of unicorns is legendary. As
described in Serena Carrington's Avalon (2002), a
unicorn's gentle voice is often heard as if within the
listener's head. Similarly, in Emerald Sword (2002),
J. M. Sampson refers to a unicorn's "mind-words."
The effect is at once soothing and startling.
On occasion, mind-words of a single unicorn may
sound like many voices speaking simultaneously.
Peter David explains in Fall of Knight (2006):
He heard the beast's voice inside his head. It
sounded both old and young at the same time,
and even though it was one voice, it sounded
like many. Like a hundred, no, a thousand
voices speaking in concert.
