(Part one of a research/collage project inspired by Chris Piuma and dedicated to Geof Huth. Thanks to Gordon Meyer for invaluable support.) Top clipping from John E. Woods' translation of Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann (Vintage International Edition, 1999). Middle clipping from H.T. Lowe-Porter's translation of Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann (Knopf, 1948). Bottom clipping from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faustus (Boosey & Sons, 1821) --- Carson Park Ranger writes: Asterisks seem to exist only on hand-held devices anymore where, sadly, they are referred to as star.

The following are examples of general properties: • being square • being self-identical • being identical with something • being next to someone • being next to a square • being a square which is larger than any other square — Gary S. Rosenkrantz, Haecceity: An Ontological Essay, 1993

I find this cartoon from Punch (Aug. 8, 1917) quite intruguing. The caption reads: Betty (after flash of lightning): "COUNT QUICKLY, JENNY! MAKE IT AS FAR AWAY AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN."
As I see it, the children have learned a formula about determining the distance of a storm, and because the formula involves chanting numbers, it has taken on mystical qualities. Jenny acts as the shaman, besought by Betty to repel the storm with her incantation. Betty will presumably count backward, to reverse and thereby neutralize the machinations of the storm. The cartoon was no doubt intended as an easy laugh, but I see quite a depth of implications!

A cartoon on the value of fairy tales, from the Jan. 8, 1919 issue of Punch. The caption reads: Poor Old Woman (to youth, who has given her a gratuity and relieved her of her load of wood): "I PRESUME, MY KIND YOUNG FRIEND, THAT YOU ARE THE YOUNGEST OF THE THREE BROTHERS WHO ARE GOING OUT TO SEEK THEIR FORTUNES?"
Clever Youth: "NO, I'M THE ELDEST. BUT I'VE BEEN READING THE STORIES."

Each one of the pictures below is entitled "Unknown Fisherman." Is an Unknown Fisherman some sort of archetypal figure? He is symbolic by his very nature, for we know nothing about him. What does his appearance suggest? Is he a manifestation of the Fisher King of Arthurian legend? And/or a Christ figure? Does he hold the Salmon of Wisdom from Irish mythology? Here's an anecdote by a person who carried an Atlantic salmon fly from one corner of Europe to the other, with the sole purpose of giving it to an unknown fisherman. The quest sounds like some sort of pilgrimage, and the gift sounds like a tribute to a deity. (In the interest of full disclosure, I am against the pestering and/or killing of fish.)

Bottom left, an Unknown Fisherman holding a 4-foot long 20 Lb Northern Pike in the year 1900. Bottom right, an Unknown Fisherman circa 2000-2001, participating in the Carmel River Steelhead Catch and Release Program.
