The darkness holds ...
- foul, unclean things
- an ultimate star
- more lessons than the light
- many keys
- spiritual realms
- secrets
- the haunted
- a shroud
- eternal sway
- becoming
- its ancient place
- all things together
- hidden wonders
- nature still in ebon folds
- different dangers and terrors
- mysteries
- its velvet hands
- more than just fear and unease
- strange forms
- no despair
- embedded dreams
- treasures and revelation
- my agony
- its breath
- no hope for tomorrow
- us down
- almost an undivided dominion
- the vale
- perpetual reign
- barely a memory
- no fears
- more than what is visible
- the light of absent eyes
- all loveliness beyond the mere design
- surprises
- you
- somewhere a rose
"Whatever the darkness holds, we must take the lantern and go out into it." —Hearts of the World

What is horror but ...
- bringing to life the unimaginable?
- the union of fear and hate raised to their highest power?
- a change in sense of scale?
- a rush of hormones?
- the truth that kills everybody?
- an emotion, a point of view, a state of mind?
- the deformation of what we expect?
- the foreground of a wonder?
- the sheer untidiness of existence?
- the realization of the ultimate loss?
- the inner phantasm of psychological dread?
- the result of projecting oneself in imagination into whatever predicament it is and recoiling in terror?
- a prophetic repetition of the tragic?
- a formless sense of unease?
- a framing and examination of the nature of evil in all its forms?
- the irreducible echo of the inexcusable suffering that takes place in our reality?
- the very dread of losing count?
- business as usual?
- part of God’s loving and eternal plan?
- just a slender breath of time in one of those haphazard moments before sleep?
- simply the truth?

The first word is always ...
• something of a psychological hurdle • the hardest to learn
• the best word
• lost
• a verb, a command
• printed with large letters and all kinds of wood-cuts
• a word of mourning • Mayday
• on the first line
• 'come,' not 'go'
• chosen
• the word that is stressed
• repeated
• capitalized
• God's
• accented
• an adjective
• a color or a shade
• the instruction code
• 'welcome'
• a blasphemy against some incontestable truth
• spoken
• a word of judgment
• replaced by the second
• 'hear' not 'read'
• indented
• the same
• the reality of the misery
• the menu name
• the predicate
• the hardest to speak
• right
• treated as a title
• remembered
• translated into English as if it were definite
• the genitive form of a personal name, and a word like ‘stone’ or ‘grave’ must be understood before it
• my last word

Here's the thing ...
- after a couple weeks the novelty will wear off
- we rarely see our own fashion flubs
- despite the danger on this road, if you drive it often, you probably feel very comfortable traveling it
- there’s a bigger, more important challenge out there and we've all overlooked it
- your story won't write itself
- most of us have something, or occasionally two things, that keeps us off the cover of Vogue
- you don’t need to sit in unusual positions
- the holidays are not a sprint
- in some cases, it’s not fun to have rules
- deep down, we all want to do the right thing
- traveling can make us crazy
- work friendships are largely geographical in nature
- shoving the negative emotion aside only buried it
- we all lie about something—our ages, IQs, how many nights a week we watch dance programs on TV
- you can't let the power freak you out if you're going to use it
- your life is full. And if you don't realize that... then you're just like the rest of us, but that's no excuse

What if a vampire ...
- on one drop of blood could linger for thousands of years?
- discovered his lover wasn't another nosferatu but was instead (shudder) a human
- had a conscience?
- used a lost dog to lure victims?
- could feed on pure emotion?
- has silver fillings in his teeth?
- faces the choice of turning someone or letting him die right then and there?
-
underwent psychoanalysis?
-
felt remorse for his actions?
-
moved in next door?
-
wants to send his grandmother a photograph, but he is invisible in each picture?
-
thinks he's a werewolf?
-
does escape his old sect?
-
became involved with artificial blood research?
-
needed to travel quickly from New York to Los Angeles?
-
is already among us?
-
tried to hold on to the light?

Everything symbolizes:
- the body
- something beyond itself
- the mind
- choices or crossroads
- living, being, and passing away
- the female principle
- freedom and progress
- interior life
- something fundamental
- majesty and judgment
- lust
- the beautiful qualities of God
- some one thing
- power and oppression
- everything else

One thing to remember:
- you must leave the ball by midnight, because then the magic will end, and your clothes will be rags again
- words that sound like fox don't have to be spelled like fox
- you cannot draw something if you do not know what it looks like
-
not only have you changed, but so have the people you are returning to
-
a compass does not really point to true north, except by coincidence in some areas
- we all have the same instrument, whether some of us have shaped it into the body of a dancer or not
- you are not alone in this
- the Great Wall was constructed over a period of thousands of years
- always discriminate between fish
- when drawing a clown, everything gets exaggerated -- that is, big nose, big mouth, weird hair, and huge shoes (usually with toes sticking out)
- glue makes wood swell
- things do go through fads, so it can be hard to say what new ideas will stick and which will be discarded as a passing fashion
- proceed one thing at a time!
- any "off" odor generally means "off" flavor as well
- learn to yelp and cluck
- we may have misunderstood the purport of a doctrine which repels us
- pressed flowers must be collected when in plentiful supply and dried well before you will need them
- political cartooning is a negative art
- the body was made to be used and not to stand idle
- floods are not abnormal happenings but a regular part of the way nature works
- all the problems you left behind have not magically disappeared
- no one is going to treat your possessions with the same tender, loving care that you would yourself
- ideas can be successfully studied only in the concrete
- all nappy hair is not bad, and all bad hair is not nappy
- there is often more than one way of working out a given problem
- a bee’s wings are held at shoulder height
- there's a limit to the amount of double duty a plot of ground can do
- you cannot delete your termination entry

Nothing is true ...
- in Washington until officially denied
- especially in charcoal
- but that which rings of right
- and everything is permitted
- but the brutal, the vulgar and the vile
- in the false, cruel sea
- and anything is possible
- and nothing is eternal
- until it is discovered for oneself
- or what is true is not evident to us
- but falsehood
- but Heaven; nothing sure excepting sorrow
- is a logically untenable statement (the phrase destroys itself)

The only way out is:
- through dreams of flying
- to develop a ‘whatever’ mentality
- to always ask why
- to roll a 1 on another turn
- to lie in it
- back the way you came
- to surrender
- a long, hard climb
- to pick up the pieces and move on
- inside a bottle
- through the valve of the cocoon
- to fine-tune the corrections
- a total and complete disclosure of who we are and what we’ve done
- in or within or down or up or through
- to run
- to train the mind to take refuge in the present
- a small hole
- through the killer ants
- to buckle down this storm
- to be transferred
- to come undone
- to go back and restore the old order
- to get out of the way
- to impose appropriate constraints
- to watch it pass through
- to take the demon's tower challenge
- on a stretcher
- saying rhymes
- rebirth
- to crawl up the other side and through a small opening under the stigma
- to grin and giggle and repeat the same old jokes over and over again
- to discard the doctrine
- to forgive and keep forgiving until there is nothing left in that place but compassion and understanding
- a gift from the gods
- being made plainer every day
- either to declare ourselves in crisis, go crazy, or diligently dedicate ourselves to the task of finding our own emancipation

Begin now because …
- to do the thing properly requires time and champagne, and at present neither are handy
- even those who have the highest hopes are worried
- things that you see around you will change
- the clock is ticking
- it looks like rain
- it is not going to go away
- we cannot afford to wait until a better technology comes along
- we will need all our imagination and our wisdom to cope with some of the critical moral questions soon to be thrust upon us
- the process can be long and challenging
- solutions will likely time time
- the risks are too grave and despite the associated difficulties, there is a great potential for good
- budget limits are already in place
- there’s so much to cover tonight
- of the great amount of lead time required
- we have become totally morally decadent
- it will be easier now
- the longer we delay, the further behind we will fall
- the complexities start to snare you
- when we do recover we are going to recover because we put things on a sound basis
- it is a revolutionary time
